COLUMBUS, Ind. (IUSTV News) – Four Columbus residents are in jail and face several drug-related charges following a multi-agency narcotics investigation, the Columbus Police Department (CPD) announced in a press release.
Police say the investigation was opened after CPD received numerous tips of criminal narcotic activity at a home on Lafayette Avenue. On Monday, CPD says they arrested Shelby E. Mitchner, 52, for Possession of Methamphetamine after officers conducted a traffic stop near the home on Lafayette Avenue that was subject to the narcotics tips.
Later Monday night, police say the Bartholomew County Joint Narcotics Enforcement Team (JNET) obtained a search warrant for the residence for possible drug violations.
CPD says before the Columbus Police Department SWAT team executed the search warrant, a traffic stop was initiated on a vehicle seen leaving the Lafayette Street home. Police say they arrested Kimberly D. Callahan, 40, on charges of Operating a Motor Vehicle While Intoxicated and Possession of a Controlled Substance.
Early Tuesday morning, police say SWAT executed the search warrant on the home on Lafayette Street, leading to the arrests of Larry G. Bergeron, 69, and Vanessa E. Cowan, 52.
Police say the search uncovered methamphetamine located in several rooms of the home including the kitchen, living room, and two bedrooms. They say fentanyl was also located in one of the rooms along with drug paraphernalia.
Bergeron is listed in MyCase with charges of Possession of Methamphetamine, Possession of a Narcotic Drug, Maintaining a Common Nuisance – Legend Drugs, all level 6 felonies, and Possession of Paraphernalia, a Class C misdemeanor.
Cowan’s charges in MyCase include Possession of Methamphetamine, a level 6 felony, and Visiting a Common Nuisance – Controlled Substances, a Class B misdemeanor.
Bergeron, Cowan, and Mitchner remain in the Bartholomew County Jail pending formal charges from the county prosecutor.
Police say additional suspects may face charges as a result of the investigation.
