Columbus man arrested after SWAT standoff

COLUMBUS, Ind. (IUSTV News) – A Columbus man was arrested and faces several felony charges after a standoff with the Columbus SWAT team early Thursday morning.

Columbus Police say 42-year-old Justin Morgan was seen driving in Columbus around 2:30 a.m. Morgan was a suspect in a recent theft of a firearm.

When officers attempted to make contact, Morgan reportedly parked his car and refused to follow commands.

Police say Morgan also reportedly told officers he was armed with a handgun.

Crisis negotiators with the Columbus Police Department, CPD SWAT, and the Columbus Bomb Squad responded to help assist.

Police say negotiators attempted to get Morgan to surrender but refused. The CPD Bomb Suad used a robot to break a window of Morgan’s car and administer tear gas.

CPD says that Morgan got out of the car a short time later and was taken into custody.

He was jailed on the following charges:

  • Possession of a Firearm by a Serious Violent Felon
  • Unlawful Possession of a Handgun
  • Possession of a Legend Drug
  • Resisting Law Enforcement

Columbus Police were assisted by The Indiana State Police, Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Office, and CRH Paramedics.

The investigation is ongoing and additional charges are possible.
