BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (IUSTV News) – More than a dozen Bloomington residents filled city hall Wednesday during a Bloomington City Council meeting, urging the council introduce and adopt a resolution calling for a ceasefire in Gaza.
Adopting such resolutions is nothing new to the Bloomington City Council. In 2003, when the U.S. was preparing for a possible war in Iraq, the council passed a resolution that opposed a war.
Several major U.S. cities, like Chicago, and San Francisco have adopted their own resolutions asking for a ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas conflict.
As with all council meetings, time is set aside for residents to speak about a concern not listed on the meeting agenda. Speakers typically get five minutes, but the council is able to reduce the time allowed if numerous people request to speak.
Jewish Voice for Peace Indiana representative Daniel Segal was one of the speakers who addressed the council. At the start of his remarks, Segal shared more on his Jewish background, saying that he grew up with neighbors who had tattooed numbers from Auschwitz.
“My parents raised me to know that when genocide is unfolding, you don’t continue with business as usual,” Segal said. “You don’t do the minimal, you do everything.”
If city council would like to bring up the resolution, it would have to be introduced at a future city council meeting.
