Two arrested after Friday night shooting in Bloomington

BLOOMINGTON, Ind.— Two people are in custody and one man is in the hospital after a shooting on Bloomington’s west side Friday night.

According to a release from the Bloomington Police Department, officers responded to an apartment complex on Curry Pike north of 3rd Street just before 11 p.m. for a reported shooting.

When officers arrived to the area, they located a 56-year-old male with gunshot wounds. Our crew was on scene as the ambulance was transported by police to the hospital.

At the same time, police attempted to locate two suspects who ran from the area.

According to the release, police quickly located two people walking along a tree line between the Highland Village Church and the Kroger parking lot.

A man and woman began running and crossed through the Kroger parking lot. Police quickly arrested the woman, identified as 19-year-old Annabella Jackson.

The man, identified as 35-year-old Devance Gayles, was arrested soon after running from police into a wooded area behind Kroger.

Police also found a gun wrapped in a sweatshirt during the investigation.

Gayles faces charges of:

  • Attempted Murder, level 1 felony
  • Burglary, level 1 felony
  • Possession of a Firearm by a Serious Violent Felon, level 4 felony
  • Criminal Recklessness, level 5 felony
  • Pointing a Firearm, level 6 felony

Jackson faces charges of:

  • Resisting Law Enforcement, class A misdemeanor
  • Outstanding arrest warrant (violation of probation, original charge of Battery Resulting in Bodily Injury, class A misdemeanor)

According to the release, the victim went into emergency surgery but is expected to survive.

Several police agencies helped in the investigation, including the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office and Indiana State Police.
