BLOOMINGTON — A crash involving a semi trailer hauling over 100 live pigs caused a major backup on State Road 37 south of Bloomington Thursday morning.

The pig owners said 162 pigs were being transported and nine died during the accident.

According to the Monroe Fire Protection District, firefighters responded just before 9 a.m. to the intersection with South Old State Rd 37 for a crash. First responders found a semi-tractor trailer had collided with another car and the semi was on its side across the highway.

The car had heavy front-end damage, but neither the driver of the car and the semi reported any injuries.

Firefighters along with Indiana State Troopers, Monroe County Animal Control Officers and a few other drivers worked to locate and detain three pigs that had escaped from the trailer after the accident.

Another livestock trailer took a while to reach the area, so crews created a makeshift pen to hold the pigs. A makeshift food trough was set up for the pigs along with fans and some hose lines to keep the pigs cool until they were transported.

State Road 37 was shut down for several hours while crews worked with to contain the pigs and remove the semi trailer from the highway.
