TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (IUSTV News) - The Vigo County Sheriff's Office has requested the Indiana State Police (ISP) to investigate an officer-involved shooting that left one man dead Wednesday night.

Police say at 4:40 p.m., officers were called to a home along South Carlisle Street in Terre Haute for a suicidal male. An off-duty deputy with the Vigo County Sheriff's Department arrived on scene first and initiated contact with the man.

A short time time later, an on-duty deputy arrived on scene and noticed the suicidal man had guns in his possession. Police say that deputy then gave the off-duty deputy a department issued rifle.

ISP says that the subject refused commands to drop the rifle that he was holding and pointed the weapon at the deputies. That's when, police say, the off-duty officer fired a single round, hitting the man.

Officers began medical treatment, but the man, identified as James Dockery, 45, died on scene.

The officer who allegedly fired the round has been placed on administrative leave while the investigation takes place.

ISP says a full report of the shooting will be submitted to the Vigo County Prosecutor’s Office for review.
