BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (IUSTV News) - The IU chapter of Delta Upsilon fraternity was suspended by the Delta Upsilon Board of Directors on Nov. 27 for hazing and endangering others, according to the Office of Student Life’s website. There are currently nine organizations on suspension, including Delta Upsilon.

According to IU's disciplinary definitions, a suspension means that an organization will cease and desist all activities and disband from the university.

Delta Upsilon's suspension comes after the fraternity was placed on cease and desist two times this year, most recently in October, for hazing and endangering others.

The chapter will be eligible to return to campus during the Fall 2026 upon meeting IU requirements.

"Following an investigation into credible complaints regarding significant hazing concerns the Delta Upsilon Board of Directors and the Delta Upsilon Executive Director, Justin Kirk, and the Vice Provost for Student Life, Dr. Lamar Hylton, have mutually agreed to close the Delta Upsilon chapter at Indiana University immediately.  This decision is in the interest of the health, safety, and wellbeing of the chapter members and the campus community."

Delta Upsilon's by-laws states that the Board of Directors may vote to suspend a university chapter of the fraternity by a two-thirds vote. A chapter may be at risk for a suspension for violating Delta Upsilon policies and procedures.

This is not the first time IU’s chapter of Delta Upsilon has been under disciplinary action from the university. According to the Office of Student Life, the chapter is currently under elevated disciplinary probation through the end of this year for a prior hazing violation. The chapter will then be on disciplinary probation starting Jan. 1, 2024 through May 5, 2025 for hazing.

In November 2018 through November 2019, the IU chapter of Delta Upsilon was on disciplinary probation from for dishonest conduct November 2020 through December 2021 for endangering others, and alcohol violations, and again in February through May 2022.
