MONROE LAKE, Ind. (IUSTV News) — A Hoosier fisherman has set a new Indiana record for the largest smallmouth bass after a catch at Monroe Lake on March 3, according to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.

Rex Remington caught the 8-pound, 4-ounce smallmouth bass, beating the previous record set in 1992 by one pound. The fish was released alive back into Monroe Lake.

According to the DNR, including smallmouth bass, there are three species of black bass, along with largemouth and spotted. Early spring is the best time to fish for smallmouth bass because they feed aggressively.

The DNR sats when fishing for smallmouth bass, "lures that imitate prey, such as spinnerbaits, crayfish-patterned crankbaits, surface lures, and live minnows or crayfish are effective."
