BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – A sexual assault and rape were reported at Eigenmann Hall on March 23, and 30, respectively, according to IU Police and Public Safety Public Information Officer Hannah Skibba.
MARCH 23 SEXUAL ASSAULT
Skibba said the assault was reported to the IU Title IX Office on March 28, and has not been reported to IUPD by the individuals involved.
Like other Title IX cases, the incident has been referred to university officials for review.
MARCH 30 RAPE
IU Police collected a sexual assault evidence kit from IU Health Bloomington Hospital on March 30, for an alleged sexual assault that happened in the dorm on the same day.
Skibba said the victim has not filed a police report and does not wish to pursue criminal charges.
No other information was available in either case
IUSTV News has maintained a database recording the dates, crimes, and locations of sexual assaults reported during the 2023-24 IU academic year. As of Aril 2, there were 33 reported sexual assaults that occurred in on-campus buildings during the fall semester, and nine reported sexual assaults so far during the spring semester, totaling 42.
There have only been two known arrests.
In November, a man was arrested for attempting to rape an IU student in Dunn’s Woods after bystanders intervened and called police. Officers reportedly located the suspect, Brian Jones, a short time later at the intersection of Fourth and Lincoln Streets. According to online court records, in January, a judge ruled Jones is incompetent to stand trial.
In December, an IU student was arrested and charged in connection to a rape reported in November at an on-campus residence hall. Michael Greenberger was arrested on Dec. 7 and charged with two counts of rape, both level 3 felonies. IUPD says that Greenberger was suspended and trespassed from the university. Online court records show that he has since moved out of the state, and is scheduled to have a hearing on April 18.
Of the 42 reported sexual assaults, fives cases were reported at McNutt Quad. Four cases each were reported at the Indiana Memorial Union, Teter Quad, Forest Quad, and Foster Hall.
Three of the cases were reported at an IU Greek house, two of which were unnamed in order to protect the identity of the victim and the suspect. The other case was a listed as a reported rape at Delta Tau Delta fraternity from September.
According to IU’s 2023 Security and Public Safety Report, for the IU Bloomington campus in 2022, there were 38 reported rapes that occurred on-campus, and five reported rapes that occurred off campus, totaling 43. This was an increase from 2021, where there were 24 reported rapes that occurred on-campus, and seven reported rapes that occurred off campus, totaling 31.
The IU Security and Public Safety Report defines rape as “the penetration, no matter how slight, of the vagina or anus with any body part or object, or oral penetration by a sex organ of another person, without the consent of the victim.”
