LAKE COUNTY, Ind. — A man fishing on Lake Michigan snagged himself a 3-pound, 2-ounce yellow perch, beating out a 43-year-old Indiana state record, according to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.

Blas Lara was fishing in the Mayor's Fishing Derby in Hammond on April 21 when he reeled the fish.

According to the DNR, the previous Indiana record for the species was  2-pound, 8-ounce fish caught from a gravel pit in Vigo County by Roy W. Burkel Jr. back in 1981.

Yellow perch are native to Lake Michigan and populations peaked in the late 1980s and early 1990s, according to the DNR website. Yellow perch feed on baitfish such as young alewives, shiners and round gobies.
