BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — The speed limit when driving on Interstate 69 near Bloomington will get faster starting this week, according to the Indiana Department of Transportation.
Currently, the speed limit is 55 mph in both directions on I-69 south of the State Road 37 interchange until Old State Road 37 on the north side of the city.
After the change, the speed limit will be increased to 65 mph.
"With this section of I-69 being located near Martinsville and a speed limit posted 65 within the city limits, INDOT wanted to create more consistency for motorists traveling to and from Bloomington and Martinsville," said INDOT Southeast Public Relations Director Sidney Nierman.
Nierman said crews plan to install the updated speed limit signs on June 27, weather permitting.
"Increasing the speed limit to 65 mph still requires motorists to take additional caution due to higher volumes and more densely spaced interchanges, but reduces such drastic change for drivers as they near Bloomington," Nierman said.
INDOT also reminded drivers to slow down, use extra caution and avoid distractions when traveling in and near work zones.
