MONROE COUNTY, Ind. — The Monroe County Health Department confirmed Tuesday that mosquitoes in the county have tested positive for the West Nile virus.

One sample from one pool of up to 100 mosquitoes was found to have the virus. The sample was collected by the Indiana Department of Health as part of
their mosquito surveillance program.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the West Nile virus is a mosquito-borne illness that can cause fever, headache, body aches, vomiting, diarrhea, or rash.

Most people who are infected do not show any symptoms.

There are no vaccines to stop the spread of the West Nile virus.

According to the CDC, the best way to prevent West Nile is to protect yourself from mosquito bites.

  • Take steps to control mosquitoes indoors and outdoors
  • Use insect repellent
  • Wear long-sleeved shirts and pants
  • Treat clothing and gear
