IU surpasses one million awarded degrees

BLOOMINGTON — Indiana University has officially passed one million awarded degrees since the university's founding in 1820, the university announced in a news release.

The millionth degree was awarded during the summer 2024 term.

“This milestone is a testament to the power of an IU degree: IU alumni are changing the world every day,” IU President Pamela Whitten said. “This achievement also showcases IU’s enduring commitment to student success. We provide a wide array of programs and support that empower our students to succeed on campus and long after they earn their degrees."

10 students made up IU's first class in 1825. The first graduating class in 1830 had four students. Nearly 19,000 students graduated in the spring 2024 semester across all nine campuses.

Today, nearly 90,000 people are enrolled at the university, making it the largest university in the state. According to IU, there are 790,033 living graduates, of which 411,047 live in Indiana.
