BLOOMINGTON — A Bloomington man will spend nearly nine years in prison for a shooting that injured a man in December 2022.
Lewis Siegrist pleaded guilty Thursday to an amended charge of aggravated battery with a serious risk of death, a Level 3 felony, and possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon, a Level 4 felony. In exchange, prosecutors dropped the remaining charges.
A judge sentenced Siegrist to 10 years for the aggravated battery charge and six years for the gun possession charge. Both sentences will be served concurrently.
At the time of the shooting, Siegrist was on probation for a previous meth possession case. He received credit for completing that sentence while being held for the shooting, and the additional time served has been applied to his most recent sentencing.
The shooting occurred around 5:30 p.m. on Dec. 27 near the intersection of Kirkwood Avenue and South Adams Street. Nearby, officers found a 42-year-old man with a gunshot wound to his upper torso.
The man was taken to the hospital and survived.
Detectives learned the man had been shot in the backyard of a home in the 1500 block of West Kirkwood Avenue and had walked through a wooded area toward Wheeler Mission. Police determined the victim had been arguing with a woman in the backyard when Siegrist approached him and shot him with a handgun.
When the victim tried to call 911, Siegrist stole his phone. Police arrested Siegrist hours later at the Speedway gas station in Spencer, Indiana, where they also found the handgun.
