BLOOMINGTON — Bloomington Police arrested a man they say made calls to Rural King posing as a police officer conducting a theft investigation on himself.

Shawn Hackney, 39, is charged with impersonating a public servant, a Level 6 felony.

According to court documents, officers responded to Rural King in Bloomington on Nov. 18 after workers reported a man had possibly stolen a knife from the store.

On scene, police spoke to employees who said a man identified as Hackney was in the store and believed to have stolen a knife and was walking into the parking lot.  Officers later learned Hackney had previously called into the store, stating he was an officer with Bloomington Police and “wanted to know about a theft by a man named ‘Shawn Hackney.’”

Police connected Hackney to the phone number from the call using a police database.
