New outdoor IU recreation park coming near Briscoe Quad

BLOOMINGTON — A new outdoor recreational park is currently under construction at the corner of East 17th and North Fee Lane, directly across from the Briscoe Quad dorms.

The new park aims to expand their fitness and sport spaces on campus.

"Our fitness spaces are at capacity a lot of times," said Chris Arvin, Executive Director of Recreational Sports. "We wanted to try and gain some fitness space wherever we could, so we partnered with the National Fitness Campaign to include an outdoor fitness cluster in this design."

The new park will accommodate many sports, including pickleball, futsal, basketball, and an outdoor fitness center. Arvin said he is most looking forward to the updated basketball court, the one part of the park that remains from the old structure.

"It will be open for use from dusk till dawn," Arvin said. "We will have lights out there. It's designed so that students can use it whenever they like—they can come and go, and they don't have to scan an ID to get in. It's right in the heart of the northwest neighborhood. We know there's a lot of residence halls around there. I think this will get a lot of use, and we're excited to see it open."

Construction is just getting started and an opening date has not been announced.
