Bloomington Police warn of recent phone scam

BLOOMINGTON — The Bloomington Police Department is giving warning about a recent scam targeting local residents.

According to BPD, several people have called to report getting a call that appear to come from a police agency, claiming that a family member is in trouble or has been in an accident.

In a Facebook post, BPD said the scammers ask money to help the family member and try for it to be picked up at the scam victim's house. BPD says the scammer may have personal information to try to make their story seem believable and create a sense of urgency; pressuring you to act quickly.

BPD says they do not contact people over the phone and ask for money.

Anyone who receives a phone calls that seem like a scam from someone claiming to be from the Bloomington Police Department is ask to hang up and call the department to verify.
