BLOOMINGTON — Cheryl Munson, an at-large Monroe County councilor and longtime county public official has died. She was 80 years old.
Munson was surrounded by her family and friends at the time of her passing, according to Monroe County Democratic Party Chair David Henry.
Munson served Monroe County for several decades, including as a member of Indian Creek Township Board for 16 years, and as member of the Monroe County Council.
She was elected to her fourth term on the council in November. Battling illness, she had missed several meetings since mid September. Tuesday's regularly-scheduled county council meeting was postponed with the announcement of Munson's death.
“Cheryl Munson was a pillar of our community, and we mourn her loss with heavy hearts,” Henry said. “Cheryl was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. Her love for Monroe County, depth of knowledge about our community and its people knew no bounds, and her contributions to the community are immeasurable. While we are saddened by her loss, we also celebrate the incredible life she lived and the legacy she leaves behind. We pause to remember Cheryl and honor her memory during this difficult time."
Henry described Munson as a "lifelong volunteer and advocate for organizations across the county." She was involved in 4-H and other youth programs.
Other local public officials are also reacting to the news of Munson's passing. In a release, Monroe County Democratic Party Vice Chair Efrat Roser said, “Cheryl was a friend to all, and she was always ready to listen, help, and offer support to anyone who needed it,” said “Her passing leaves a void in our hearts, but her spirit will live on through the work she has done and the relationships she built over the years.”
The office of Bloomington Mayor Kerry Thomson issued a statement on Facebook Tuesday night, writing, “Cheryl’s dedication to public service and her thoughtful leadership made a lasting impact on Monroe County and its residents. Her commitment to collaboration and service set a standard for civic engagement that will continue to inspire those who follow in her footsteps—and her legacy will endure through the positive changes she helped bring to Monroe County."
With Munson's passing, the Monroe County Democratic Party will begin the process of filling the vacancy. The party is working with the Indiana Secretary of State’s Office to review procedures, according to the release.
