INDIANAPOLIS — Republicans at the Indiana Statehouse have drafted a bill that would ask Illinois for dozens of rural counties that want to leave Indiana’s neighboring state.

House Bill 1008, titled Indiana-Illinois boundary adjustment commission, was written by Indiana Speaker Todd Houston, of Fishers.

It would establish a commission of both Indiana and Illinois representatives to discuss the feasibility of redrawing the state boundary. The Illinois General Assembly would need to pass a similar bill.

Seven Illinois counties faced ballot measures in the November election about succeeding from the state, and all seven voted in favor.

The bill now heads to the Committee on Government and Regulatory Reform, where lawmakers will have a first reading Jan. 21.
