IUPD issues Crime Notice for a dozen recent burglaries

BLOOMINGTON — An IU Crime Notice for just over a dozen burglaries was sent to the campus community Thursday evening.

According to the crime notice, between Jan. 4 and 15, IUPD received 13 reports of burglaries at various locations across campus, many were at residence halls and a Greek house.

IUPD said the burglaries occurred while students were away from campus during winter break.

On Jan. 5, 12 and 15, burglary reports were filed at Ashton Johnson Hall, Forest Quad, and Willkie South. Three students reported various items were missing from their rooms including clothes, a musical instrument and an amplifier.

Another student said someone entered and rummaged through their room but nothing appeared missing.

On Jan. 12 and 13, seven separate students reported things were missing from their rooms, including electronics, clothing and jewelry.

IUPD does not have any known suspects, as of publication, but said there is a possible lead for the burglaries at Beta Sigma Psi.

Anyone with information is asked to call the IU Police Department at 812-855-4111. You may also call Crime Stoppers at 1-317-262-TIPS (8477).

IU Police shared a list of safety tips to help keep your items safe:

  • Close and lock all doors and windows to your residence, room, or office.
  • Always take your keys or card with you, even if you leave for only a short time.
  • Do not lend your keys or card to anyone you do not know and trust.
  • Always hide valuables and money so they cannot be seen through windows.
  • Always report suspicious behavior. IU has blue light emergency phones located throughout the campus that connect directly to IUPD.
