MONROE COUNTY — The caucus scheduled for Sunday to fill a vacancy on the Monroe County Council has been postponed because of the incoming winter storm, Monroe County Democrats announced Friday.

The party will now meet at 1 p.m. Jan. 19 at the Nat. U Hill Room in the Monroe County Courthouse to appoint the interim councilperson at-large.

The vacancy was left by the late Cheryl Munson, who died Dec. 10.

Munson served Monroe County for several decades, including as a member of Indian Creek Township Board for 16 years, and as member of the Monroe County Council. She was elected to her fourth term on the council in November.

Nine candidates are vying to fill the vacancy: Richie Carter, Matt Cauldie, Rob Council, Joe Davis, Liz Feitl, Andrew Guenther, Sarah LarsonScott Shackelford and Ilana Stonebraker.

Candidate statements can be found in each of the links for the respective candidates.

Under Indiana law, the party must give at least 10 days written notice to the precinct committee ahead of a re-scheduled caucus.

“We take safety seriously. As a kid who grew up in the Northern Ohio snowbelt, this weather pattern concerns even me.” said party chair and Monroe County Councilperson David Henry. “We want to assure we have a full-throated vote for our newest County Councilperson and give the candidates the time and opportunity to be considered by our full committee. We will just have to wait out Jack Frost a little longer to seat the full Council for this term.”

Much of Indiana and other parts of the midwest are bracing for a winter storm that could bring moderate to heavy snow, possible sleet and sub-freezing temperatures Sunday through Monday.

Bloomington is expected to get anywhere from six to 10 inches of snow, although some areas may see locally higher totals, according to the latest forecast from the National Weather Service. An updated forecast is expected Saturday morning.
