WASHINGTON — Outgoing U.S. President Joe Biden will give a farewell address to the nation on Wednesday, the White House said Friday.
Biden, 82, will address Americans from the Oval Office at 8 p.m. Eastern time, the White House announced.
Five days later — on Jan. 20 — the Democrat will formally hand over the presidency to his Republican predecessor Donald Trump, who was elected in November to the presidency for the second time.
The transfer of power in Washington, D.C., is taking place against the backdrop of the violent events of four years ago, when Trump supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol in an attempt to prevent the certification of Biden's 2020 election victory.
Biden has repeatedly emphasized the importance of an orderly and peaceful transfer of power for democracy.
