BLOOMINGTON — A now-former IU student will avoid jail time and see several charges dismissed after taking a plea deal in a 2023 rape case.

Michael Greenberger, 20, pleaded guilty this week to battery with moderate bodily injury, a Level 6 felony in exchange for two Level 3 felony rape charges being dismissed.

Monroe County Judge Valeri Haughton accepted the plea deal and sentenced Greenberger to serve one year of house arrest. He will also have to pay the victim $1,500 in restitution.

The assault allegedly happened at Foster Hall on Nov. 15, 2023, and the victim, who was not affiliated with IU, reported the assault to officers at IU Health Bloomington Hospital two days later.

Greenberger was arrested on Dec. 7 of that year and was suspended and trespassed from the university.
