Bloomington Showers West building renovation project on hold over price concerns

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — The Bloomington Redevelopment Commission rejected all construction bids for the Showers West renovation project, citing Mayor Thomson’s concerns about the project price tag.

The project would move both Bloomington Fire and Bloomington Police headquarters to the Showers West portion of the city hall building after a major renovation. The proposal was put forward by former-mayor John Hamilton in the summer of 2022.

Since then, the proposal has receive stark pushback from the police union, who had concerns over the entrance and overall location issues.

“The city does not have all the funding to follow through on its commitments, including rebuilding two fire stations, creating a new fire logistics center, and constructing an entirely new police station within Showers West.”

(D) Bloomington Mayor Kerry Thomson

Thomson said the fire headquarters are likely to find a home in the city hall building, taking over a now-vacant portion of the building. The two fire stations and fire logistics center will continue forward, but the police station relocation plan has been nixed.

If and where the Bloomington police station will be remains to be said.
