BLOOMINGTON — A Bloomington woman is facing a new charge of murder after the man she is accused of stabbing in August died at Indianapolis hospital on Wednesday.

Briley Turner, 25, is already in jail on charges of attempted murder, a Level 1 felony, and aggravated battery, a Level 3 felony.

The Monroe County Prosecutor’s Office amended the charges Friday, adding a charge of murder, a felony.

The man was identified as 36-year-old Michael Hodge. At the hospital after the stabbing, doctors noted Turner had older bruises on her legs and sides, as well as blood on her hands and arms.

BACKGROUND
Bloomington police responded to Kinser Flats Apartments around 7 p.m. Aug. 18 for a domestic dispute after a caller told police a woman was yelling and a man was screaming for help in the apartment complex.

When police arrived, no one answered, and officers had to break down the door. Inside, court documents say, Turner was found lying on the couch covered in blood, and a man was found with multiple stab wounds in the bathroom.

Police also found a bloodied kitchen knife, a bloody tire plug tool with a metal spike, and a bloody baseball bat.

Both Turner and the man were taken to IU Health Bloomington Hospital.

According to court documents, the man had been stabbed multiple times, including near the collarbone, ribs, scrotum, thigh, hip, and buttocks. He had other cuts and punctures in the abdomen and neck, as well as a broken left arm.

The man told police he and Turner were about to take a shower when she hit him with a baseball bat and then began stabbing him all over his body. Police learned the man got cuts all over his hands while trying to stop the attack.

According to court documents, the man said the two were not arguing before the stabbing and there was no reason for the attack.

When police tried to talk with Turner, she refused, the documents state. Doctors observed she had older bruises on her legs and sides, as well as blood on her hands and arms.

In court documents, an officer noted that while at the apartment, Turner said, “He tried to get me,” and “He tried to put that stuff down my throat. I don’t know what he put in my throat, and I had to defend myself, dude.”

Doctors determined Turner was unharmed and was able to stand on her own and listen to officers.

When being transported from the hospital to the police department, Turner again refused to speak with police.

She was booked into jail on a charge of aggravated battery, a Level 3 felony. The Monroe County Prosecutor’s Office officially filed the charges Thursday and added the attempted murder charge, a Level 1 felony.

If convicted, Turner faces between 20 and 40 years for the attempted murder charge, and between three to 16 years for the aggravated battery charge, according to Indiana sentencing guidelines.
