Bus driver taken to hospital after crash with pickup truck

BLOOMINGTON — Part of Indiana Avenue was closed Tuesday morning after a crash involving a Bloomington Transit bus and a pickup truck pulling a trailer carrying lawn care equipment.

The crash happened just after 9 a.m. near Indiana Avenue and Cottage Grove Avenue. Indiana was closed from 10th to 11th Streets while crews worked at the scene.

According to Bloomington Police, the driver of the bus was taken to a hospital to be treated for injuries, but is unknown how many passengers were on the bus at the time of the crash because some exited the bus and walked away before first responders arrived.

Six of the passengers and the passenger in the truck reported injuries to police but were not transported to the hospital.

The bus was going south on Indiana Avenue and the pickup truck was going west on Cottage Grove Avenue. The driver of the truck reported the bus had stopped to puck up passengers, and so he continued through the intersection, but was hit by the front end of the bus.

The bus driver reporter she was driving south when the trailer was driving through the intersection, but was unable to stop the bus in time.

The truck and trailer were then pushed off the road into a grassy area in front of a house with a fire hydrant, causing damage to both.

The front windshield and bumper of the bus was shattered. The rear windshield lawn care truck was shatter and the truck's bed also had damage.

According to police, the pickup driver failed to yield the right of way to the bus, but was not given a ticket.

Both the bus and the truck and trailer were later towed from the scene.
