Design plans approved for housing project at former Poplars site

BLOOMINGTON — The IU Board of Trustees approved of the architectural design for what will eventually become student housing at the old Poplars building site.

In August, the board granted approval of the ground lease for the $81-million project which will be located at the one-acre lot at Seventh and Dunn Streets.

The project design encompasses a six-story building with nearly 200,000 square feet.

158 units will accommodate about 396 beds, and the building will feature a complex design. Three landscaped courtyards will line Seventh Street, building on the pedestrian-heavy area that already has the 7-Line bike trail.

The ground floor of the building will be built with limestone, which will house the lobby for the main entrance court yard and leasing office.

There will also be student amenities for studying.

Floors two through six will be built using red brick. Student-housing units will be available in studio to four bedroom layouts on all floors of the building.

The project is expected to be complete by March 2026.
