BLOOMINGTON — Two separate but similar street maintenance projects will begin in the coming weeks near downtown and the near-west side, the City of Bloomington announced Thursday.

DOWNTOWN STREET MAINTENANCE PROJECT

The Downtown Street Maintenance Project will cover 4th Street from Madison Street to Indiana Ave., 6th Street from Walnut Street to Indiana Ave., College Ave. from 11th Street to 4th Street) and Walnut Street from 11th Street to 3rd Street.

There will be asphalt resurfacing, new pedestrian curb ramps and the replacement of damaged sidewalks. Additionally, crews will construct intersection bump-outs at multiple locations,

The city will also be removing the eastbound right turn lane at the intersection of 4th Street at College Ave. and removing the westbound right turn lane at the intersection of 4th Street at Walnut Street.

Head-in angle parking on 6th Street from Walnut Street to Washington Street will be converted to back-in angle parking.

WEST 3RD STREET MAINTENANCE PROJECT

The West 3rd Street Maintenance Project, which is scheduled to begin in September, will see similar street maintenance and safety upgrades.

3rd Street from Franklin Road to Patterson Drive will have asphalt resurfacing, replacing damaged sidewalk panels, and adding accessible pedestrian curb ramps.

There will also be new pavement markings, including a painted buffer between the bicycle lane and motor vehicle lanes from Franklin Road to Landmark Avenue and a new mountable truck apron in the southwest corner of the intersection of 3rd Street and Patterson Drive.

“The planned maintenance and safety improvements are critical to ensuring our infrastructure meets the needs of our growing community,” says Bloomington Director of Engineering Andrew Cibor. “These projects will not only improve the quality and safety of our roads but also enhance accessibility for all residents and visitors.”

Funding for this project is provided through the Indiana Department of Transportation Community Crossings Matching Grant Program.
