BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Randy Cassady, the Republican candidate for the District 2 seat on the Monroe County Board of Commissioners is suspending his campaign.
Cassady appeared at a meeting for the Monroe County Election Board Thursday to make the announcement, and admitted to the board that he had missed the six-month residency requirement.
“It’s unfortunate that the voters of Monroe County won’t have an opportunity to decide on their representation in District 2, but I believe that everyone in the election process must abide by the rules as specified,” Cassady said. “I love this community and I will continue to be an active resident to help chart a path forward for our county that puts common sense and the best interests of residents first.”
The election board is expected to meet next Thursday to formally resolve the complaint.
Monroe County Democrats filed the challenge on July 29, asking the board to investigate if any violations occured.
Under Indiana Law, a candidate for county commissioner is required to live within the district they represent for at least six months before the general election.
Monroe County Democrats Party Chair David Henry claims Cassady’s voter registration is with an address in District 1 and that Cassady voted using this address in the 2023 and 2024 primaries.
In the challenge, Henry wrote that Cassady changed his voter registration on May 30, listing a home in District 2, which would be after the six-month deadline of May 5.
District 2 represents the Bloomington Township.
Cassady was running against incumbent Democrat Julie Thomas, who defeated Peter Iversen in the May primary.
