Hoosiers Held Scoreless Again in Loss to Wisconsin

Indiana women’s soccer once again couldn’t get momentum going on offense as they fell in their penultimate home game to the Wisconsin Badgers. Indiana (6-6-2, 1-6-1) was defeated by Wisconsin (7-3-4, 3-2-3) by a final of 1-0. The goal came about 12 minutes in by Aryssa Mahrt.

It was once again a struggle offensively for Indiana as they weren’t able to generate many chances throughout the match. One of the few opportunities for Indiana came in the first minute when Marisa Grzesiak crossed a ball into the box for Olivia Smith, whose shot was saved by Wisconsin. That chance was followed by a variety of chances for Wisconsin including Mahrt scoring between the wickets of Jaime Gerstenberg.

“We didn’t play well and didn’t really create anything,” Indiana Head Coach Erwin Van Bennekom said.

Coming out of halftime, Indiana was able to maintain more ball control. However, the Hoosiers still never had the golden opportunity for the equalizer. They had just a total of two shots on goal in the match. In fact, for the 7th time this year in Big Ten play, Indiana couldn’t scratch across a goal.

There were a couple of positives for the Hoosiers as the defensive line had a strong second half. While Wisconsin had eight shots in the first half, it was just four shots in the second half.

Next up for Indiana is their final home match of the season as they take on Illinois Thursday night. First kick is set for 7 PM ET.
