Indiana age verification law for adult websites now in effect

phone-scrolling

A new Indiana law requiring Hoosiers to show proof of identification to access adult websites is set to go into effect after a previous hold.

The United States Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals issued the ruling Friday, lifting the hold until the U.S. Supreme Court rules on a similar law in Texas.

Until a ruling from the nation's highest court, Indiana's law will be enforced.

Senate Bill 17, which passed the Indiana General Assembly earlier this year, was set to become law July 1. However, just days before, a federal judge agreed with the plaintiffs in a federal lawsuit, and halted the law, ruling it was likely unconstitutional.

Under the law, websites with adult content will have to require age verification for users with a driver’s license, government ID, or third-party age verification service.

Critics of the law argue user personal information would be at risk, however under the law, companies would be prohibited from storing age verification data and could face civil penalties if they do so.
