BLOOMINGTON — An IU student was arrested Tuesday night for a rape that reportedly happened at an on-campus residence hall after last week’s home football game.
Gregory Gabler, 18, of Lake Worth, Florida, is charged with two counts of rape, a Level 3 felony.
In a statement, IU Public Safety Public Information Officer Hannah Skibba said Gabler was issued a trespass warning for all IU property.
The rape was reported to police on Sept. 10 and the victim said the assault happened at Willkie Hall between 11 p.m. Sept. 6 and 3 a.m. Sept. 7. An IU Crime Notice was sent to the campus community around the time of the arrest.
According to court documents, the victim told police she had went to Gabler’s dorm with other friends to hangout after the game. The other friends left about a half hour after and the victim stated that is when the violent assault occured.The victim reported Gabler was “drenched in beer,” and was “very aggressive and violent.”
According to court documents, the victim stayed in the room until Gabler went to sleep before she left and went back to her dorm. Police spoke to the victim’s roommate, who reported the girl had woken her up when she got back and was crying uncontrollably.
Police also collected photos taken after the assault that documented the injuries.
IUPD located Gabler in one of his classes on Tuesday and took him to the police department for questioning, but refused to answer any questions. Officers arrested Gabler later that evening.
Gabler has an initial hearing in court Thursday.
This is the second time since the start of the fall semester that an IU student has been arrested for sexual assault charges that were reported to have happened on campus.
In August, IU Police arrested Jackson Arnold, 18, for allegedly touching a female student inappropriately several times during move-in week. Arnold is facing three counts of sexual battery, each level 6 felonies.
The start of the academic year to Thanksgiving Break is known as the “Red Zone,” or the time during the year when sexual assault reports are highest.
According to IU’s 2023 Security and Public Safety Report, for the IU Bloomington campus in 2022, there were 38 reported rapes that occurred on-campus, and five reported rapes that occurred off campus, totaling 43. This was an increase from 2021, where there were 24 reported rapes that occurred on-campus, and seven reported rapes that occurred off campus, totaling 31.
The IU Security and Public Safety Report defines rape as “the penetration, no matter how slight, of the vagina or anus with any body part or object, or oral penetration by a sex organ of another person, without the consent of the victim.”
