Monroe County, Indiana University offer free text alert system for April 8

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — With hundreds of thousands of travelers expected to make a trip to Monroe County for April 8’s total solar eclipse, Indiana University is partnering with Monroe County to provide a text alert system for the day of the once-in-a-lifetime event.

Those who want to opt-in to the alert system should text “MoCoEclipse” to 226-787. All subscribed users will be removed from the alert system on April 10.

Indiana is within one day driving distance of 70% of the United States, and because of that, city and state leaders are anticipating roughly 300,000 eager eclipse viewers will travel to the Monroe County area. Across the entire state, that number could be well over 1 million people.

Due to the expected influx of people to the area, IU and the Monroe County Community School Corporation have cancelled all in person classes on April 8.
