Two killed in crash on Interstate 65

SCOTT COUNTY, Ind. (IUSTV News) — Two commercial vehicle drivers were killed in a crash on Interstate 65 in Scott County, according to Indiana State Police.

In a release, ISP said that troopers responded to the southbound lanes just south of Austin, Indiana, around 11:50 p.m. Monday. Once on scene, first responders found three semi-trucks blocking both lanes of traffic, with two of those semi-trucks on fire.

A preliminary investigation found that one of the semis is believed to have stopped in traffic due to construction near the 31-mile marker. A second semi began to slow to a stop, but a third semi was not able to stop and crashed into the second truck.

ISP said that the second semi then crashed into the first truck, and the second and third semis immediately caught on fire.

The drivers in both the second and third semi trucks died at the scene.

In the release, ISP said that I-65 south remained closed until 11 a.m. the following morning. During the investigation and clean up, traffic was diverted off the interstate at the Austin exit.

The crash remains under investigation.
